Fast Friends was born 13 years ago in Madison, WI. The cold of January was setting in for the long haul and the three of use were depressed. The glow of office lights loomed over our drab cubicles as we commiserated over hot chocolate and Nacho Cheese Doritos. We had come out of the holidays feeling sluggish and disgusted. As usual, we had overdone the festivities with too much cheer and chips. It began innocently enough, one holiday party here, one office celebration there, but before we noticed it, our overindulgence had moved in and applied for permanent status.

Each of us had tried to evict our excessive squatters, with little success. Our thoughts weren't enough to get us through the weakest moments. We couldn't do it alone, but maybe together?

We agreed to give up each of our collective excesses. By bonding together for a common goal, we were motivated, committed and strong. Each of us added an excess and we pledged to say 'goodbye' to cheese chocolate and alcohol for six weeks. There were some very minor mishaps along the way (we will never again need to be reminded that cream cheese is a member of the 'cheese' family), a maybe a couple of slips but in the end we achieved our goal and gained even more than we expected.

In the beginning, the purpose of the fast was to break our unhealthy habits, gain an appreciation for the abundance in our lives and grow from the experience of sacrifice. We reached these objectives and discovered that there were even more benefits that we had not considered.

We realized that we felt empowered by taking on a challenge and succeeding. We were inspired to take on other challenges in life because we knew we had the power over our own choices and decisions.

We became much closer as friends. Working on a common goal we supported and inspired each other. Through the laughter and talks, we shared our fears, expectations and aspirations, and began to know each other on deeper levels.

The fast became an annual event. We found that we always had things to work on and to be reminded of. We needed a set time in our hectic lives to focus on ourselves. Each year became a time for reflection on the past, inspiration for the future and, of course, fun and friendship. The celebration time became time to do things together that we loved, but couldn't find time for: crafting, cooking and brainstorming on life plans and ideas.

After the first two years, we all went our separate ways. Megan to Northern California, June to Southern California and Lori to Iowa. The fast became even more important as a way for us to keep in touch with each other.

Over the past years we have reflected on how much we have gained from the annual event. We had benefited in so many ways that we wanted to share the experience with others. We decided to collaborate on something even bigger: a tool to facilitate the coming together of friends on a journey to confidence, motivation, encouragement and fun. Fast Friends was born!!!
